The Kidneys-

Functions

-removes metabolic waste products from the blood.

-Secrete the horomone erythropoien which helps to regulate red blood cell production

-Secretes the horomone renin which helps regulate blood pressure.

The Kidneys are bean shaped organs that lie behind the peritoneal Cavity on either side of the vertebral column.

Renal Sinus- Medial depression of a kidney
Hilum-contains the renal arteries
Renal Pelvis-Expansion of the ureter that further divides into calyces. A Calyce is a small cavity inside your kidney.
Renal Cortex-Outermost portion of the kidney
Renal Medulla-Middle portion that also divides into renal pyramids.

Nephrons

-removes waste products from the blood

-Each kidney contains about 1 million nephrons

-Contains both a renal corpuscle and a renal tubule.

Renal Corpuscles

-are compoased of a group of capollaries called a glomerulus

-Is the site of blood filtration.

Renal Tubule

-Extends from the glomerular capsule of a nephron.

-consists of three parts:

1.Proximal convoluted tubule

2.loop of Henle

3.Distal concoluted Tubule

Blood Flow through a Nephron

Afferent-Glomerulus-Efferent Arteriole-Peritubular capillaties-Veins of the Kidney
